The Family LineEzekiel 18:20

My Grandfather, My Father, And Now Me

This message is for the reader who can see the same pattern running through three generations of their family and has just caught it in themselves

You saw it on a Wednesday and you have not been the same since.

Not a large incident. Something you did, in a specific way, in a room, and about four seconds later a thing arrived in your head that you had never had before, which was: that is exactly what he does.

And then the second one, which was worse, because it went one further back.

Your grandfather. Your father. And now you, at forty six, in a kitchen neither of them has ever stood in, doing the thing.

And the four seconds are not the difficult part. The difficult part is the hour afterward, in a chair, going back through about fifteen years looking for other occasions, and finding them, one after another, in perfectly ordinary weeks that had been filed as nothing at all.

Nobody has been told. Nobody is going to be told, because said out loud it would sound enormous and it did not feel enormous. It felt like a sum coming out.

My Grandfather, My Father, And Now Me

What runs and what does not

Let me separate two things that feel identical when you first see this.

The first is that a way of being in a house travels. It absolutely does. Children learn what they watch, and what they watch they repeat, and three generations of the same behavior in a family is one of the most ordinary things in the world.

The second is the idea that it is transferred as a nature. That something came down the line and is in you, and that what you saw on Wednesday was that thing surfacing.

Those are not the same, and scripture separates them sharply.

You have inherited something learned rather than something transferred, and no behavior in a family has ever once been handed down as a nature. Ezekiel 18:20 says the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, which is the written word cutting the line where people assume it runs, and the Holy Spirit is the one who separates a habit from an identity.

And your father is a whole man in this, and I am not going to hand you a case against him. He watched it too. He was somebody's son in a house where a man did this, and nobody ever sat him down and offered him a different way of being in a kitchen.

He is right about at least one thing you have never conceded to him. And you can end this without deciding anything at all about him.

You are able to stop a thing without condemning the men it came through, and ending something has never once required a father to be found guilty. The Spirit of God is what makes an ending possible with nobody accused, and it is written in Ezekiel 18 that the son does not carry the father's account.

The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father

The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him. (Ezekiel 18:20, King James Version)

That chapter exists because a nation had a proverb, and the proverb was that the fathers have eaten sour grapes and the children's teeth are set on edge.

That is exactly your Wednesday, said three thousand years ago. It means: what they did, we are paying for. What runs in the line runs, and there is nothing to be done.

And God spends a whole chapter taking that proverb apart. He says at the start of it that they shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb.

You have been carrying a proverb that God went to a whole chapter of trouble to abolish, and no line in scripture has ever once been described as running through a man automatically. It is written in Ezekiel 18:20 that the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, which is the written word cutting the cord, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that land in a man who saw three generations in himself on a Wednesday.

And look at the last clause, which is the practical half. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

Upon him. Each account stays with its own owner. Your grandfather's is his. Your father's is his. And what you do in your own kitchen at forty six is yours, and it is not their story continuing, it is a separate man's account being opened.

You have an account of your own that nobody else has written in, and three generations of the same thing has never once meant a fourth was already decided. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps each account with its owner, and Ezekiel 18 puts the righteousness and the wickedness each upon the one who did it.

Saying it out loud

Here is the practical thing, and it is small because it has to be sustainable.

Say it out loud, in plain words, once.

You are able to speak a thing that has been silent for three generations, and one plain sentence has never once been a smaller act than a decision nobody says. The Holy Spirit is the one present when a family thing is finally put into words, and it is written that the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father.

The reason it has to be said and not merely decided is that the pattern has traveled in silence every single time. Not one of those men ever named it. It moved by being watched and never discussed, and a thing that has never been described has nothing standing against it.

Say it plainly. In this family the men do the thing, and it stops here.

And then the second half properly, because that is where the weight is. It stops here. Not I hope so, not I am going to try. It stops here, said flat, by a man in a kitchen who has now seen it and cannot unsee it.

You are able to say four words as a fact rather than a hope, and a man who has finally looked at a thing has never once needed to hedge about it. The Spirit of God is what puts weight into a short sentence, and Ezekiel 18:20 leaves each man's account upon himself and nowhere else.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man at a kitchen table who saw three generations in four seconds.

You are able to end this line without hating anybody in it, and God has never once been obliged to repeat a family through a man. Ezekiel 18:20 says the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, in a chapter written to abolish a proverb about exactly this, and the Holy Spirit is the one who cut that cord long before Wednesday.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You were never carrying their account, and what you do in your own kitchen at forty six has never once been the continuation of anybody's story except your own. The Spirit of God is speaking over somebody with a lamp on and a dark window behind him, and it is written in Ezekiel 18 that the righteousness and the wickedness are each upon the one who did them.

Say it out loud. Then say the second half flat.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Four seconds on a Wednesday, you have no claim on the man I am. Ezekiel 18:20 says the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, so by the Holy Spirit I name it out loud tonight and I say that it stops here, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Proverb about the fathers and the children, you were never once true and God abolished you outright. The written word puts each account upon the one who did it, and by the Holy Spirit I say the second half flat and without a hedge.
  3. Father, You spent a whole chapter taking that proverb apart, and You have never once been obliged to repeat a family through a son. Your word says the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, so by Your Spirit I open my own account and I end this here.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
