You were about eleven when you first watched her do it.
Something would start. Not a row, usually. Just a conversation with weight in it, and there would be a particular quality in the air, and about ninety seconds in your mother would get up and find something to do in another room.
Nobody followed her. Nobody said anything about it. And the conversation was simply over, permanently, because there is no way to finish something with somebody who is in the kitchen.
You promised yourself a great many things about your own life at eleven. And on Thursday you were standing in a hallway with a cloth in your hand and no memory of having decided to leave.
And the conversation on Thursday was not even a hard one. Somebody asked a fair question about a thing that needed deciding, and there was a weight in the air of about four ounces, and the hallway arrived before the answer did.
Your husband said nothing about it. He has never once said anything about it, in twenty two years, and it has started to be worth wondering what he thinks it is.

The exit is a skill
Let me name what that exit actually is, because contempt for it will not help.
It is a competence. Somewhere in your mother's life, staying in a room with weight in it was dangerous or unbearable, and she developed an extremely efficient method of leaving without a scene. It works. Nobody can object to a woman going to do something in a kitchen.
And you learned it by watching, the way children learn everything, without a single word being said about it.
You have been running a competence rather than a flaw, and no exit learned at eleven has ever once been evidence of cowardice in a grown woman. Psalm 139:23 says search me, O God, and know my heart, try me and know my thoughts, which is the written word asking for exactly this kind of seeing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a person a habit without contempt attached to it.
And she is a whole woman. She did not sit you down and teach you this. She was surviving something, probably something she has never described to anybody, and the leaving was the best tool she had.
She is right about at least one thing you have never conceded, and nothing in this article is a case against her.
You are able to see where this came from and hold nobody accountable for it, and understanding an inheritance has never once required an indictment. The Spirit of God is what makes an origin visible without a defendant, and it is written in Psalm 139 that the searching is invited rather than dreaded.
Search me, O God
Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. (Psalm 139:23, 24, King James Version)
That is a request, and the fact that it is a request changes everything about how this kind of noticing feels.
David asks to be searched. He invites the examination, which means he is not braced for it, which means he has understood something about the searcher that most people have not.
You do not ask a hostile inspector to go through your house.
You are able to invite the seeing rather than survive it, and no examination by God has ever once been conducted with contempt for the person being examined. It is written in Psalm 139:23 that we say search me, O God, and know my heart, which is the written word making the request from the inside, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a woman a hallway on a Thursday without any shaming in it.
And look at the end of it. Lead me in the way everlasting. The searching is not the point. It is the first half of a request whose second half is about being taken somewhere.
Which means the noticing you did on Thursday was not the end of anything. It was the front half of a sentence.
You are being shown something so that you can be led out of it, and no seeing from God has ever once been given to a person merely so they would know. The Spirit of God is the one who does the leading after the searching, and Psalm 139 puts the way everlasting at the end of the same request.
The doorway
Here is the practical thing, and it is deliberately small because the large version does not work.
Do not try to stay in the room. That is too big and you will fail at it and the failure will confirm something you already believe.
Stay in the doorway.
You are able to stop in a doorway, and going eight feet instead of thirty has never once been the same as staying put. The Holy Spirit is the one who is present in a small deliberate distance, and it is written that we say search me, O God, and lead me in the way everlasting.
What that means in practice is this. The conversation gets weight in it, and your body starts to move, and it will, because a thirty year groove does not stop being a groove.
Let it move. Stand up. Pick up the cloth. And then stop at the door, and turn round, and say: I am still here.
Four words. From a doorway. That is the entire assignment and it is nothing like what your mother did, because she did not stop and nobody said anything and the thing was over.
You are able to say four words from a doorway, and a small stop has never once required a woman to become somebody she is not. The Spirit of God is what holds a body at a threshold, and Psalm 139:23 asks for the searching precisely so that a leading can follow it.
So here is what I believe is going out over a woman standing in a hallway with a cloth in her hand.
You are able to stay in a doorway, and one inherited exit has never once been the whole of what you are made of. Psalm 139:23 says search me, O God, and know my heart, and it ends with lead me in the way everlasting, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the leading after the seeing.
And this, which is the word I came with.
You were given a competence rather than a fault, and thirty years of an exit learned at eleven has never once been a verdict on the woman running it. The Spirit of God is speaking over somebody standing in a doorway talking to a room, and it is written in Psalm 139 that the searching was asked for from the inside and never imposed from outside.
Four words. From the door. I am still here.
Declare this over yourself
- Groove I learned at eleven, you have no claim on Thursday. Psalm 139:23 says search me, O God, and know my heart, so by the Holy Spirit I name my mother's inheritance out loud and I say that it stops here, in the name of Jesus.
- Exit that ends a conversation permanently, you were never once the only thing available to me. The written word asks for the searching so that a leading can follow, and by the Holy Spirit I stop at the door and I say I am still here.
- Father, You made the searching a thing a person asks for and You have never once examined anybody with contempt. Your word says lead me in the way everlasting, so by Your Spirit I let this be seen, and I stay in the doorway, and I let You take me out of it.
