Not My ChoosingPsalm 68:6

I Did Not Choose Any Of These People

This message is for the reader who is still waiting for their family to become the one they hoped for, and has spent years disappointed by the one they actually have

You did not pick one of them.

Not your mother. Not your brother. Not the one who says the thing at every gathering, and not the one who has not asked you a question about your own life since about 2019. You were placed among these people without being consulted, and there is no mechanism anywhere for revision.

Before anything else, one sentence I am not going to say to you. I am not going to tell you that your family is a gift and that you ought to be grateful for it. That sentence has been used to keep people quiet in houses where they were being harmed, and I will not put it anywhere near you.

And if what you carry is not disappointment but harm, if somebody in that house hurts you or frightens you, then nothing in this article is aimed at you. Getting yourself safe, and talking to somebody qualified where you live, comes first and comes before every other word here.

I Did Not Choose Any Of These People

The second family nobody knows about

Here is the specific thing I want to name, because I think it is doing more damage than any individual relative in that house.

There is a second family living alongside the real one. An imaginary one, built out of the same people very slightly adjusted. Your father with about ten percent more warmth in him. Your sister without the thing she does. A mother who asks a question and then waits for the answer.

You have never once said this second family out loud, because said out loud it sounds ridiculous. But every real interaction gets measured against that version, quietly, in the two seconds after it happens, and the real one comes up short every single time. That has been running for something like twenty years.

You have been comparing living people to a family that has never existed, and the exhaustion you feel has never once been a sign that you love them badly. Psalm 68 says God sets the solitary in families, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can hold a real household in front of you without the imaginary one standing behind it.

The imaginary family is not a fantasy. That is what makes it so hard to put down. It is built out of real moments. Your father was warm once, on a particular afternoon, and you have that afternoon on file. The whole invented version is assembled from evidence.

So it never feels like wishing. It feels like remembering.

You were never wrong to want it, and wanting a family that asks you questions has never once been a childish thing to want. That is written into the shape of Psalm 68:6, where the solitary are set in households rather than left in the dry land, and the Spirit of God does not shame anybody for wanting what He Himself invented.

What the passage actually says

God setteth the solitary in families: he bringeth out those which are bound with chains. (Psalm 68:6, King James Version)

Read that slowly, because there is something in it that is easy to skate over.

It does not say God gives people good families. It says He sets the solitary in families. The verse is about placement. It is about a person who was alone being put somewhere, into a household, with other people in it, and the other people are not described at all.

And your mother is a real person inside that silence. She was handed a way of being a mother by somebody, and nobody ever sat her down and offered her a different one. Your brother is right about at least one thing, and you know which thing, and you never once said so out loud because saying it would cost you the tally.

That silence is not an oversight. Psalm 68 is a psalm about a God who moves through a wilderness with a people who complained the entire way, and the psalm does not pretend the people were easy. It says He went before them anyway.

You were set among these particular people by a God who had His eyes fully open, and He has never once been surprised by anybody at that table. Psalm 68:6 sets the solitary in families rather than in ideal families, and the same Spirit who led a difficult nation through a wilderness is the one at work in your family now.

Which means something you may not have considered. God is not waiting for your family to improve before He starts working here. He is not standing outside the situation with His arms folded until somebody apologizes.

He has been working the whole time, in the actual house, with the actual people.

You have been treated by God as somebody worth placing, not as somebody who got left with the leftovers, and that placement has never once been an accident of paperwork. The Spirit of God is the one who makes that land somewhere below the neck, and it is written in Psalm 68 that He sets the solitary in families and brings out those bound with chains.

Accepting the facts, not the treatment

Now the distinction the whole thing turns on, and I want to be very precise here because it gets confused constantly.

Accepting your family means accepting the facts. It does not mean accepting the treatment.

The facts are these. Your mother is who she is. Your brother is who he is. Neither of them is going to be handed back, and neither of them has agreed to become the improved version you carry around. That is the ground under your feet, and pretending otherwise has cost you two decades.

Accepting the treatment is an entirely different thing, and nobody is asking you to do it. A boundary is not a failure of acceptance. Leaving a room is not a failure of acceptance. Declining to be spoken to a certain way is not a failure of acceptance. You can hold every fact about your family clearly in view and still decline, today, to be treated the way you were treated last Christmas.

You are allowed to see your family exactly as it is and still refuse what is not yours to absorb, and those two have never once been in conflict. It is written in Psalm 68:6 that He brings out those bound with chains, which is the second half of the same verse, and the Holy Spirit is the one who unhooks a person without asking them to hate anybody.

Here is what changes when the imaginary family goes.

You stop being disappointed. Not because things got better, but because you stopped running a comparison that only one side could win. The phone call is just a phone call. Your father says the thing he says, and it is what he says, and it does not have to be measured against a father in your head who would have said something else.

That is not resignation. Resignation is going flat. This is the opposite of flat: it is being able to see one real person, in front of you, for the first time in years.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody who has been quietly disappointed for twenty years.

You were set in this family on purpose, and accepting the facts has never once meant accepting the treatment. Psalm 68:6 says God sets the solitary in families, and it says in the same breath that He brings out those bound with chains, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing both of those at once in you.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You have a real family, made of real people, and God has never once been waiting for them to improve before He would begin. The Spirit of God is already at work in that house, and it is written in Psalm 68 that He goes before His people through the wilderness rather than waiting on the other side of it.

Put the second family down. It was never anybody you could reach.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Twenty years of measuring them, you have no claim on another evening of my life. Psalm 68:6 says God sets the solitary in families, so by the Holy Spirit I put the invented family down tonight and look at the real one, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Quiet disappointment at every gathering, you were never proof that I love them badly. It is written that He brings out those which are bound with chains, and by the Holy Spirit I accept the facts of this family without accepting one thing that is done to me.
  3. Father, You set me among these particular people with Your eyes open, and You have never once been waiting for them to improve before You would work here. Your word says You set the solitary in families, so by Your Spirit I say one name out loud tonight and thank You for one true thing.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
