I Am The Only One Who Can Handle Him

The phone goes and it is your sister, and she opens with a sentence you have heard about four hundred times.

You are so much better with him than I am.

It is said warmly. It is meant as a compliment and it is probably even true. And you say something modest, and you take the number, and you make the call, and by Tuesday you have absorbed another thing that nobody else in that family has had to absorb.

Nobody appointed you. But there was a moment, about fifteen years ago, when you handled something well, and the family filed it, and it has been the arrangement ever since.

And if what you are handling is not difficulty but harm, if he frightens you or hurts you or anybody else in that house, this article is not the first thing you need. Getting safe, and talking to somebody qualified where you live, comes before any of it.

The compliment that is also a transfer

Let me look at that sentence carefully, because it is doing two things at once and only one of them is visible.

Her sentence about being better with him than she is does two things at once, and only one of them is visible. The visible part is praise. The invisible part is a handover, and it is complete the moment you accept the praise, because a compliment is very hard to decline and a job attached to a compliment is harder still.

It is not a trick. Your sister is not scheming. She is relieved, and relief makes people generous, and the generosity arrives as a description of you that also happens to be a rota.

You have been complimented into a job, and no amount of skill at something has ever once obliged a person to do it forever. Numbers 11:14 has a man saying he is not able to bear all this people alone, which is the written word putting that sentence into scripture, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can carry a refusal without turning it into a fight.

And your sister is a real person here. She probably genuinely cannot do it as well as you can. She may have tried and it may have gone badly and she may still be carrying that. She is also right about something you have never conceded.

None of that makes it your permanent post.

You are able to grant every word of what she says and still put it down, and agreeing with somebody has never once required you to keep their arrangement. The Spirit of God is what makes a plain no possible without a case attached, and it is written in Numbers 11 that a leader said the load was too much for him.

That is Moses, and he says it out loud, to God, in the middle of a job he was personally called to.

Sit with that for a second. Not a job he took on by accident. Not a job somebody handed him at a family gathering. A commission he received directly, in a burning bush, with signs attached to it. And he still says the load is too heavy and he is not able to bear it alone.

You have permission to say a sentence Moses said, and admitting a load is too heavy has never once been the mark of somebody who cannot do the work. It is written in Numbers 11:14 that he was not able to bear it alone because it was too heavy for him, which is the written word in the mouth of the most capable man in the book, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that sentence sayable.

And look at the response, because this is the part that matters for you. God does not rebuke him. There is no correction, no reminder of the calling, no suggestion that he should have more faith.

God distributes. Seventy men are appointed and the same Spirit that was on Moses is put on them.

You are looking at a God who answers that sentence by spreading the weight, and He has never once responded to an honest limit by demanding more. The Spirit of God is the one who was placed on seventy others in that chapter, and Numbers 11 has the load divided rather than the man corrected.

What the title has cost you

Here is the part I want you to look at, because the job is not the main damage.

The title is.

Being the one who can handle him has stopped being a task and become an identity. It is in the way your family talks about you and, worse, in the way you talk about yourself. The steady one. The one who does not get rattled. That is your position in the family and it has been your position since about 2011.

And a position is very hard to leave, because leaving it does not read as declining a task. It reads as becoming somebody else.

You have been carrying a description rather than a duty, and no title in a family has ever once been the truth about the person wearing it. The Holy Spirit is the one who separates a man from his function, and it is written that Moses said plainly he was not able to bear this alone.

There is a cost nobody sees. Because you are the one who handles it, nobody asks how it goes. They ask you how he is. Nobody has asked how you are in relation to him in about a decade, because the title makes the question seem unnecessary.

The steady one does not get checked on. That is the deal, and nobody ever said it out loud.

You are allowed to be somebody who finds this hard, and being good at a thing has never once removed a man's right to be tired by it. The Spirit of God is the one who sees the person behind the function, and Numbers 11:14 records the admission without one word of shame attached to it.
