The Sibling GapGenesis 2:24

He Married And I Lost Him

This message is for the reader who quietly lost a sibling to the family they married into, and has never said so to anybody

Nothing happened. That is what makes it so hard to describe.

There was no falling out. Nobody said anything. He got married, and it was a good day, and you meant every word of the toast.

And then, over about three years, he moved. Not physically. Holidays go to her family now, and it makes complete sense because there are more of them and they live closer. The messages got shorter and then they got fewer. He knows things about her brothers that he does not know about you.

And the last four times you have spoken, you called him.

You have never said any of this out loud to anybody, because said out loud it sounds like a man complaining that his brother got married.

He Married And I Lost Him

What actually happened

Let me name it accurately, because the fuzziness is why you cannot put it anywhere.

The brother is not what got lost. What got lost is the shape of the thing, which was daily and casual and required no arrangement, and which existed because two men lived roughly in the same current.

He is now in a different current. Not a worse one. A different one, with its own gravity, and gravity is not a decision anybody makes.

You have been mourning a shape rather than a person, and no change in a brother's household has ever once been the same as losing him. Genesis 2:24 says therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother and shall cleave unto his wife, which is the written word describing a real leaving, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can name a loss that nobody in the family would recognize as one.

And she is a whole person in this, and it matters that she is. She did not take him. She is not running a campaign. She married a man and the two of them built a life, which is what people do, and the fact that it has a shape that leaves you further out is not a thing she did to you.

Her family is closer and larger and that is a fact about geography. She is also right about at least one thing you have never conceded to her.

You are able to feel the distance and hold nobody responsible for it, and a loss has never once needed somebody to blame in order to be real. The Spirit of God is what keeps an ache from finding a target, and it is written in Genesis 2 that a man leaves and cleaves and that this is by design.

Therefore shall a man leave

Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. (Genesis 2:24, King James Version)

Notice the word the whole verse turns on, and how few people sit with it.

Leave. Not visit less. Leave. Scripture builds the leaving into the design, on purpose, in the second chapter of the book, before anything has gone wrong anywhere.

Which means what happened to you is not a failure of your brother's character and not a symptom of anything. It is the thing the text describes as normal.

You are watching something scripture calls by design, and no leaving of that kind has ever once been evidence that a man stopped caring about anybody. It is written in Genesis 2:24 that a man shall leave his father and his mother and shall cleave unto his wife, which is the written word making the leaving structural, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person accept a design and still feel the cost of it.

And here is what the verse does not say, which is the part that helps. It does not say he leaves and does not come back. It does not say the old ties are dissolved. It describes a reordering of first place, not a demolition of everything else.

He has a new center of gravity. He still has a brother. Those are compatible and you have been treating them as though they are not.

You still have a brother inside a household you are not the center of, and a reordering has never once been the same as a removal. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps a real tie visible when its shape has changed, and Genesis 2 reorders the household without canceling anybody in it.

Going toward, not calling him back

Here is the practical part, and it is a change of direction rather than an increase of effort.

Every attempt so far has been an effort to get him back into the old current. Every call has, somewhere in it, an attempt to reconstitute the thing the two of you had. The old jokes, the old subjects, a suggestion about something you used to do.

And every one of those, without meaning to, asks him to leave where he is and come back to where you are, which he cannot do and which makes the calls slightly tiring for both of you.

You have been calling somebody back rather than going toward him, and no man has ever once been able to return to a current he has already left. The Holy Spirit is the one who turns a person around mid habit, and it is written that a man shall leave and shall cleave and they shall be one flesh.

Going toward looks like this. Ask about her family by name. Learn the names of her brothers. Ask about the thing they do at Christmas. Take an interest in the household he actually lives in, rather than in the one he came from.

That is the move, and it will feel like conceding for about a month, and then it will not, because it is the only door that is actually open.

You are able to walk into the household he joined, and taking an interest in her family has never once been a surrender of your own place. The Spirit of God is what makes a genuine curiosity possible where there has been an ache, and Genesis 2:24 puts the new household first without deleting the old one.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man who has called first four times running.

You are able to go toward the household he joined, and losing the shape of a brother has never once meant losing the brother. Genesis 2:24 says therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother and shall cleave unto his wife, written into the design in the second chapter, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can turn an ache toward an open door.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You were never left behind, and a man moving into a new center of gravity has never once been able to cancel the one who stayed where he was. The Spirit of God is speaking over somebody on a back step in the evening light, and it is written in Genesis 2 that the leaving reorders a household and never demolishes it.

Learn three names. Ask about one of them.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Three years of getting shorter and fewer, you have no claim on the brother I still have. Genesis 2:24 says therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, so by the Holy Spirit I ask after her family by name today, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Ache with nothing to point at, you were never once smaller for having no argument attached. The written word builds the leaving into the design in the second chapter, and by the Holy Spirit I stop calling him back and I go toward where he is.
  3. Father, You wrote the leaving into the design before anything had gone wrong anywhere, and You have never once made a reordering into a removal. Your word says shall cleave unto his wife, so by Your Spirit I learn three names and I send one short message today.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
