The House Split Us

There were two signatures and a house and it took eleven months.

You could still lay out the whole thing, and you would be accurate, and the accuracy is part of what has kept it going. There was a valuation. There was a thing your brother said in a solicitor's office. There was a text at ten past eleven at night that you have never deleted.

That was five years ago.

And here is the question that has started arriving lately, usually about four in the morning. If somebody knocked on the door tomorrow and handed you the difference, in cash, would that be the end of it?

And the honest answer is no. Which means it has not been about the money for some time, and you are not entirely sure when that changed.

What the house was carrying

Let me say what an inheritance actually is in most families, because it is very rarely about the amount.

A house is the last thing your parents will ever decide about you. It is a document that says who was thought of, in what proportion, at the end. And whatever is in it gets read as a verdict, even when it was written by two tired people at a desk who were mostly thinking about paperwork.

So the argument was never about a valuation. It was about what the valuation was taken to mean.

You have been fighting about a document that was read as a verdict, and no house has ever once been able to say what a parent thought of a child. Luke 12:15 says a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth, which is the written word separating a person from their portion, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can take a paper out of a family's hands and leave the people standing.

And your brother is a whole man on the other side of it. He has an account of those eleven months that is not the same as yours and that he could also lay out accurately.

He was probably reading the same document as a verdict too, from the other side, and he is right about at least one thing you have never conceded. That does not make you wrong about the thing he said in the office.

You are able to be right about what happened and still lose a brother over it, and being correct has never once been the same as being repaid. The Spirit of God is what shows a person what an argument actually cost, and it is written in Luke 12 that a life does not consist in what a person has.

A man's life consisteth not

And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. (Luke 12:15, King James Version)

Read what prompts that sentence, because the setting is exactly your setting.

A man in the crowd calls out and asks Jesus to make his brother divide the inheritance with him. That is the question He is answering. Somebody in a family, with a genuine grievance about an estate, asking for a ruling.

And Jesus refuses to arbitrate. He says: who made me a judge or a divider over you. And then He says the thing about a man's life.

You have been asking for a ruling from a court that declines to sit, and no verdict about an estate has ever once been able to give anybody their life back. It is written in Luke 12:15 that a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth, which is the written word answering an inheritance question with something else entirely, and the Holy Spirit is the one who redirects a person who came for a judgment.

And notice: He does not say the man's complaint was invalid. It very possibly was not. The text does not adjudicate it at all, in either direction, which is its own kind of answer.

What He does is refuse to let a man's life be settled by a division of property.

You are able to stop waiting for the thing to be settled, and no ruling in your favor has ever once been what you actually lost in those eleven months. The Spirit of God is the one who moves a person off a question that cannot pay out, and Luke 12 leaves the inheritance entirely undivided and speaks about a life instead.

What is actually recoverable

Here is the practical shape of it, and it is narrower than you want and more possible than you think.

The money is not coming back. The apology is probably not coming. The account of those eleven months will never be agreed between the two of you, and nobody is going to sit down and establish who was right, because there is no such body.

What is available is much smaller. It is contact. Not resolution, not restitution, not a conversation about any of it. Just the fact of the two of you being in touch about ordinary things.

You are able to have your brother back without any of it being settled, and contact has never once required a case to be closed first. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes an ordinary message possible after five years, and it is written that a man's life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.

And that means the message has to have nothing in it. No mention of the house. No mention of five years. No hint that you are ready to move on, which is a sentence that hands him a decision and puts you above him in it.

Something small and true. Saw a car like Dad's on the bypass. That is all.

You are able to send five words that concede nothing and demand nothing, and a message about a car has never once been a surrender of anybody's position. The Spirit of God is what makes a small contact carry weight, and Luke 12:15 refuses to settle the estate and settles a life instead.
