The Sibling GapPsalm 51:17

I Am The One Who Said It

This message is for the reader who was the one who said the unforgivable thing, and has been unable to go first because going first looks like asking to be let off

You know the exact wording.

Not roughly. Exactly. You could write it out now, with the pauses in the right places, and you know what the kitchen looked like and what was on the table and what time it was.

That was four years ago and you have not had a real conversation with your sister since.

And here is the specific trap you are in, which is different from most people's. You cannot go first, because you were the one who did it, and a message from you would not read as a message. It would read as an application. Please can this be over now. Please can we not.

So the thing that would end it is the one thing you are not able to send, because sending it looks like asking to be let off.

I Am The One Who Said It

Nobody is going to soften it

Let me start where you would not expect, which is by not minimizing it.

I am not going to tell you it was not that bad, or that everybody says things, or that she probably provoked it. You know what you said. It was aimed and it landed and it did the thing you meant it to do at the time.

That is the truth and you have been living with it for four years, and the last thing you need is somebody telling you the truth is smaller than it is.

You have been carrying something real rather than something imagined, and a genuine wrong has never once been made lighter by being explained away. Psalm 51:17 says a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise, which is the written word receiving exactly the state you are in, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can hold a person who is actually guilty without any pretending.

And she is a whole person on the other side of four years. She has her own account of that kitchen and it is not the same as yours.

She is also, possibly, waiting. And she is right about at least one thing you have never conceded, and none of that is something you can find out from here.

You are able to hold what you did without becoming the whole of it, and one sentence in a kitchen has never once been the sum of a person. The Spirit of God is what keeps a guilt from becoming an identity, and it is written in Psalm 51 that the sacrifice God wants is a broken spirit.

A broken and a contrite heart

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. (Psalm 51:17, King James Version)

David writes that after the worst thing he ever did, and the whole psalm is worth knowing because of what he does not do in it.

He does not explain. He does not describe the circumstances. He does not mention anybody else's part in it. There is no version of Psalm 51 where he manages the story.

He says: I did it. And then he asks God for a clean heart.

You are permitted to be plainly guilty in the presence of God, and no honest account of a wrong has ever once been despised by Him. It is written in Psalm 51:17 that a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise, which is the written word promising a reception rather than a verdict, and the Holy Spirit is the one who receives four years of it in one evening.

And notice what the verse calls it. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit. It calls the brokenness an offering. Not a problem to be resolved before worship can start. The offering itself.

You have been treating your guilt as a thing that disqualifies you. Scripture calls it a thing you can bring.

You have something to bring rather than something to hide, and a contrite heart has never once been the reason a person could not come. The Spirit of God is the one who receives it as an offering, and Psalm 51 puts the broken spirit on the altar rather than outside the door.

What the message is not

Now the practical part, and it turns entirely on what the message is for.

Nothing has been sendable, because every draft turns out to be an application. It asks for something. Forgiveness, a reply, a conversation, an end to this. And an application would be unfair to send, because it puts her in the position of having to grant or refuse.

So send something that asks for nothing.

You are able to send a message that requests absolutely nothing, and one sentence with no ask in it has never once put a burden on the person receiving it. The Holy Spirit is the one who supplies the short version, and it is written that a broken and a contrite heart God will not despise.

That means: no mention of the past. No apology, which sounds impossible and is the key to the whole thing. An apology, four years on, is a request for a response, and it is the biggest ask in the catalogue.

Something like: saw a heron on the canal today and thought of Dad. Nothing else.

That is it. It carries no charge. She can answer it or not answer it and neither costs her anything, and it says the only thing that actually needs saying, which is: I am here and I am not gone.

You are able to say I am still here in eleven words, and a message with nothing in it to answer has never once been a manipulation. The Spirit of God is what makes a small honest thing enough, and Psalm 51:17 asks for a heart rather than a performance.

And if there is a reason contact would be unsafe for her or for you, do not send it. That is a real category and this site does not know your family. Take that one to somebody qualified where you live.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who has known the exact wording for four years.

You are able to go first without asking for anything, and reaching out has never once been the same as applying for a pardon. Psalm 51:17 says a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise, and it calls that brokenness the offering itself, and the Holy Spirit is the one receiving it tonight.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You were never disqualified from going first, and being the one who did it has never once meant being the one who has to wait. The Spirit of God is speaking over a woman at a kitchen table with a phone in her hand, and it is written in Psalm 51 that God does not despise a heart in exactly the state yours is in.

Eleven words. No ask. Send it.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Exact wording I have carried for four years, you have no claim on tonight. Psalm 51:17 says a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise, so by the Holy Spirit I send eleven words that ask for nothing, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Sense that a message is an application, you were never once a reason to stay silent. The written word puts a broken spirit on the altar rather than outside the door, and by the Holy Spirit I go first and I request nothing at all.
  3. Father, You called a broken heart the offering itself and You have never once despised somebody who was actually guilty and said so. Your word says thou wilt not despise, so by Your Spirit I bring the whole of it tonight and I send the short message and then I put the phone down.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
