The Oldest Son Carries It All

Nobody appointed you. You were nine.

There was a period, and you know which one, when something in that house needed somebody to be steady, and you were the oldest and you were there. So you got steady. You learned to notice things early, and to handle them before they became anybody else's problem, and to be the person who did not need anything.

It worked. That is what makes this so difficult. You were very good at it at nine and you have been very good at it ever since.

And now you are fifty one and it is still your job, and it was never once given to you by anybody who had the authority to give it, and there is nobody to hand it back to.

The job nobody issued

Let me name what actually happened, because it was not a decision and it was not fair.

A family under pressure distributes roles without discussing them. Somebody becomes the one who lightens the room. Somebody becomes the one who is looked after. And somebody becomes the one who is capable, and that one gets the fewest questions asked of them for the rest of their life, because a capable person by definition does not need anything.

You got the capable one. At nine.

You were handed a job by a house rather than by a person, and no role assigned to a child has ever once been an agreement that child made. Matthew 11:28 says come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest, which is the written word addressing exactly the people who do not ask, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can lift something off a man that was put on a boy.

And your parents are whole people in this. Nobody sat down and decided your childhood would look like that. They were carrying something themselves, and a nine year old who was managing well was a relief in a house with very little relief in it.

At least one of them is right about something you have never conceded. And none of that requires them to have done it on purpose.

You are able to end this without an indictment of anybody, and putting something down has never once required a house to be found guilty. The Spirit of God is what makes an ending possible with nobody accused, and it is written in Matthew 11 that the invitation goes out to those who are heavy laden.

Come unto me, all ye that labor

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. (Matthew 11:28, 29, King James Version)

Read who is being addressed, because it is not who people usually assume.

All ye that labor and are heavy laden. That is not the weak and it is not the failing. Laden means loaded, and a man does not get loaded unless somebody judged him able to carry it. This is addressed to the capable ones.

The people in that sentence are the ones everybody relies on, and He calls them out by name.

You are the specific person that verse was spoken to, and being the one who carries has never once put a man outside an invitation to rest. It is written in Matthew 11:28 that He says come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, which is the written word addressing the capable rather than the collapsing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says it to a man at fifty one who has never once asked for anything.

And then the second half, which is where the practical relief is. Take my yoke upon you.

He does not offer a life with nothing on it. He offers a different yoke, worn a different way, and the reason He gives is not that it is light but that He is meek and lowly in heart.

What changes is who set the load, and how they regard the one carrying it. The house that loaded you at nine was not gentle. It was not cruel either. It simply was not looking.

You are able to carry something set by somebody who is actually looking at you, and no load given by a God who calls Himself lowly has ever once been laid on a man carelessly. The Spirit of God is the one who exchanges a yoke rather than removing every weight, and Matthew 11 puts the meekness of the one giving it at the center of the offer.

The one thing to put down

Here is the practical part, and it is one item rather than the whole role.

Nothing here is asking you to stop being capable. That is thirty years deep and it is also genuinely who that boy grew into, and there are people in that family who rely on it and will keep relying on it.

Pick one thing you have been carrying and stop carrying it. One.

You are able to put down exactly one thing, and a single item set down has never once been the same as abandoning a family. The Holy Spirit is the one who is present in a very small refusal, and it is written that He gives rest to those who labor and are heavy laden.

Choose something small enough that nothing collapses. The call you always make first. The thing you always notice before anybody else. The problem you always solve on a Sunday afternoon without being asked.

And here is the discipline that makes it work: do not tell anybody you are doing it. An announcement turns a small act into a conversation about your childhood, and that conversation would go badly and is not the point.

You are able to stop doing one thing without saying a word about it, and a quiet change has never once been less honest than a declared one. The Spirit of God is what holds a man through the first week of not doing something automatic, and Matthew 11:28 offers rest to the loaded and not to the unemployed.
