I Heard His Voice In Mine

It was about a shoe on the stairs.

Not a large matter. And you said a sentence, at a particular volume, with a particular thing at the end of it, and the room changed slightly, and you heard it.

Not the words. The voice. Your father's, out of your own mouth, at fifty one years old, in a kitchen he has never stood in.

Your son did not react much. He picked the shoe up. And you have been thinking about it for about three weeks.

And what has been going round since is not really about the shoe, or about the volume, or even about the thing on the end of it. It is that thirty years have gone into quietly deciding not to be that, and it took four seconds and a pair of shoes on a step to find out how thin the wall is.

He is fifteen. He will not remember it. That is almost certainly true and it is not the point, because you will.

What you actually inherited

Let me be accurate about what happened, because the horror of the moment tends to overstate it.

There was no becoming your father in that kitchen. What happened was the reproduction of one sentence, in one register, heard several thousand times before the age of fifteen. That is not a soul being transferred. That is a groove, worn deep by repetition, that your mouth found under pressure because it was the nearest available shape.

That is a smaller thing than it felt like at the time, and it is also entirely real.

You have inherited a groove rather than a nature, and one sentence in a kitchen has never once been the same as becoming somebody. Luke 6:45 says out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh, which is the written word tracing a sentence to its source, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can work on the source rather than only on the mouth.

And your father is a whole man in this, and I am not going to hand you a case against him. He got that sentence from somewhere too, almost certainly from a man who got it from another man, and nobody in that line was ever offered an alternative.

He is right about at least one thing you have never conceded to him. And none of that requires you to keep the sentence.

You are able to end something without condemning the man who handed it on, and stopping a thing has never once required somebody to be blamed for it. The Spirit of God is what lets a person put down an inheritance without an indictment attached, and it is written in Luke 6 that the mouth speaks out of what is stored up.

Out of the abundance of the heart

A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. (Luke 6:45, King James Version)

The word to sit with in that verse is abundance, because it changes what the verse is doing.

Abundance means overflow. What comes out of a mouth is what there is too much of inside. Not what a person believes, and not what they intend. What there is a surplus of.

Which means the sentence about the shoe was not a statement of who you are. It was an overflow measurement, and overflow tells you what is stored, and what is stored can be changed.

You have been given a reading rather than a verdict, and what comes out of a mouth under pressure has never once been the whole of what is in a man. It is written in Luke 6:45 that of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh, which is the written word tracing the sentence to a store rather than to a nature, and the Holy Spirit is the one whose actual work is on the store.

And notice what the verse implies about how change happens. It does not say a good man watches his mouth carefully. It says a good man brings forth good out of the good treasure of his heart.

The mouth is downstream. Working only on the mouth is possible and exhausting and it fails under pressure, which is exactly where that sentence found you.

You are able to have something else stored, and no man has ever once been asked to hold a sentence in by force for the rest of his life. The Spirit of God is the one who changes what is in the treasure, and Luke 6 puts the mouth at the end of the process and never at the start.

The four seconds

Here is the practical thing, and it is about what happens after, not before.

You are going to say it again. Probably within a month. That is not defeatism, it is how grooves work, and a man who expects never to say it again will be defeated the first time he does.

What you can change is the four seconds afterward.

You are able to do something new in the four seconds after an old sentence, and one repetition has never once canceled the fact that something ended. The Holy Spirit is the one who is present in the pause a man did not used to have, and it is written that of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.

In your father's house, what happened after a sentence like that was nothing. It stood. Everybody adjusted around it, the evening continued, and it was never once mentioned again.

That is the actual inheritance. Not the sentence. The silence after it.

So break the silence rather than the sentence. Say: that came out wrong. Three words, no speech, no explanation of your childhood.

You are able to say three words your father never said, and a small repair has never once required a large conversation. The Spirit of God is what makes an ordinary correction possible in a kitchen, and Luke 6:45 puts the whole thing at the level of what is stored rather than what is performed.
