You were scrolling and there it was.
A cake with a number on it. Nine. Your brother's boy, in a room you have never been in, with about eleven people in the background that you can mostly identify.
And you did the thing everybody does, which is look at it for a while and then look at the date.
You did not know. Nobody told you. And there is no version of that where somebody was being cruel, and there is also no version where it does not land somewhere in your chest.
The whole thing takes about ten seconds and then you are sitting in a front room deciding what kind of man you are going to be about it.

Two bad options and a third one
Let me name the two roads in front of a man in that chair, because both are familiar and both are bad.
The first is to say something. Not aggressively. A light remark with a hook in it, at the next thing, delivered warmly enough that nobody could object and pointedly enough that it lands. You know exactly how to do that.
The second is to pretend it did not happen. To scroll past, to feel nothing on purpose, and to let it join the pile of small things you have decided not to feel over about nine years.
You have been offered a choice between a jab and a lie, and no family on earth has ever once been improved by either one of them. Proverbs 19:11 says the discretion of a man deferreth his anger and it is his glory to pass over a transgression, which is the written word offering a third road, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it available at about second four.
And your brother is a whole man in this. He did not sit down and decide to leave you out. He has a nine year old, a house, a schedule and about forty things going wrong at once, and there is a very good chance you simply did not surface.
He is also right about something you have never conceded, and it is entirely possible he thinks you would not have come.
You are able to hold this without deciding what it meant, and a thing that hurt has never once been proof that somebody intended it. The Spirit of God is what keeps an omission from becoming a message, and it is written in Proverbs 19 that discretion defers anger.
It is his glory to pass over
The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression. (Proverbs 19:11, King James Version)
Two halves and both of them are doing something precise.
The discretion of a man deferreth his anger. Deferreth, not deletes. The anger is real, and it is acknowledged as anger, and what discretion does is put a gap between the feeling and the response. That gap is where a man decides who he is.
So the verse is not telling you not to feel it. It assumes the feeling. It regulates the ten seconds afterward.
You are being given a gap rather than an instruction to feel nothing, and no scripture has ever once required a man to pretend a thing did not sting. It is written in Proverbs 19:11 that the discretion of a man deferreth his anger, which is the written word putting a delay between the wound and the answer, and the Holy Spirit is the one who arrives inside that delay.
And then the second half, which is the surprising one. It is his glory to pass over a transgression.
Glory. Not duty, not obligation, not being the bigger person, which is a phrase people use to describe swallowing something. Glory is a word about weight and honor. The passing over is called the impressive part.
You have a thing available to you that scripture calls a man's glory, and passing over an offense has never once been the same as pretending nothing happened. The Spirit of God is the one who makes an actual passing over possible rather than a suppression, and Proverbs 19 puts the glory on the man who lets it go.
The difference between passing over and swallowing
Here is the distinction that makes this workable, because a great many things have been swallowed over the years and it has not made anybody free.
Swallowing is when the thing goes down unnamed and stays. It becomes part of the case, and the case gets consulted the next time something happens, and after nine years there is a file.
Passing over is when the thing is named, to God, out loud, and then genuinely released. It does not go into the file, because it went somewhere else.
You are able to name it to God rather than store it, and one sentence said out loud in a front room has never once been the same as building a case. The Holy Spirit is the one who receives a small wound that would sound petty to anybody else, and it is written that it is his glory to pass over a transgression.
Say it. I found out from a screen and it hurt. That is the whole prayer, and it is not petty, and God does not need it to be a larger grievance before He will take it.
Then send the message. Not about the party. That is the discipline of this one.
Send: tell him happy birthday from me. Nothing else. No hint, no lightly worded remark, no reference to how you found out.
You are able to send a sentence with nothing hidden in it, and eight words with no hook in them has never once been weakness. The Spirit of God is what empties a message of everything except the thing it says, and Proverbs 19:11 calls that passing over a man's glory.
So here is what I believe is going out over a man in a front room ten seconds after a photograph.
You are able to pass over this without pretending it did not happen, and letting something go has never once required a man to feel nothing. Proverbs 19:11 says the discretion of a man deferreth his anger and it is his glory to pass over a transgression, and the Holy Spirit is the one who arrives inside that gap tonight.
And this, which is the word I came with.
You were never left out on purpose, and one photograph on a screen has never once been able to tell a man what his brother thinks of him. The Spirit of God is speaking over somebody looking up from a phone rather than into it, and it is written in Proverbs 19 that the passing over is a man's glory and not his defeat.
Eight words. No hook. Send it.
Declare this over yourself
- Photograph of a cake with a nine on it, you have no claim on the next nine years. Proverbs 19:11 says it is his glory to pass over a transgression, so by the Holy Spirit I name it to God out loud and I let it go tonight, in the name of Jesus.
- Remark I know how to deliver, you were never once able to get me what I want. Nine on a birthday cake and a nephew I heard about from a feed, you have no verdict in you. The written word defers the anger and calls the passing over a glory, and by the Holy Spirit I send eight words with no hook in them.
- Father, You put a gap between the sting and the answer and You have never once asked a man to feel nothing about being left out. Your word says the discretion of a man deferreth his anger, so by Your Spirit I stand in that gap and I send the plain message.
