I Called It A Curse For Years

You have prayed about this more than you have prayed about anything else in your life.

Fifteen years, on and off, sometimes for whole seasons. You have fasted about it twice. There was a period where you did not talk about anything else with the two people who knew.

And you have named it every time. The thing that runs in your family, going back as far as anybody can trace, and you have called it what everybody in your circle calls a thing like that, and you have come against it in every way you know how.

And it is still there. Your cousin has it. You watched a version of it in yourself in March.

And the two people who know about all this would say you have been faithful about it, and they would be right. Nobody has prayed about a family more consistently than this one has been prayed about.

Which is exactly why the question coming next is uncomfortable, and why nobody has ever put it to you before.

What has never been examined

Let me ask something that is going to feel like an attack for about ten seconds and is not one.

In fifteen years of praying about this, have you ever sat down and described what actually happens? Not what it is. What happens. Who says what, at what point in an evening, and what everybody else in the room does immediately afterward.

Because it is entirely possible that you have prayed about a thing for fifteen years without once looking at it.

You have been contending with a category rather than with what is happening, and no amount of prayer has ever once been a substitute for looking at a thing plainly. Proverbs 26:2 says as the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come, which is the written word putting a condition on a thing landing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a person what is actually in front of them.

And your family are whole people in this. Everybody in that line was handed something by somebody, and nobody was ever offered another way, and none of them is under a sentence that fell on them out of the air.

Your father is right about at least one thing you have never conceded, and this article does not need anybody to be at fault.

You are able to look at your own family without a category over the top of it, and describing what happens has never once been a smaller act than praying about it. The Spirit of God is what makes an accurate look possible, and it is written in Proverbs 26 that a causeless thing does not land.

The curse causeless shall not come

As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come. (Proverbs 26:2, King James Version)

That verse is doing something specific and it is worth reading slowly.

Two birds go past. A bird wandering, a swallow flying. Both of them are moving through the air above a man's head and neither of them lands on him. That is the picture, and then the sentence: so the curse causeless shall not come.

Causeless. Without a ground, without a reason, without something to land on. It goes over.

You have a word in scripture for a thing with nothing to land on, and no causeless thing has ever once been able to settle on a household. It is written in Proverbs 26:2 that the curse causeless shall not come, which is the written word putting a condition on it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can lift fifteen years of dread off a man who thought he was under something.

And here is what that reframes. What you have been fighting has a cause, and the cause is not spiritual in the way you have assumed. It is a habit, learned by watching, repeated for four generations by people who were never shown anything else.

That is not a smaller enemy. It is a real one, and it has a real doorway, and a habit that travels by being watched is beaten by being named and stopped in front of the same watchers.

You are able to fight the thing that is actually there, and a pattern with an ordinary cause has never once been beyond the reach of God. The Spirit of God is the one who does the work at the level where the thing is actually operating, and Proverbs 26 leaves a causeless thing flying overhead.

What to do with fifteen years

Now the part I do not want you to skip, because a man in your position often lands hard here.

Those fifteen years were not wasted.

You have been praying, seriously, for a family. That is not nothing and God does not treat it as nothing, and nobody here is telling you that you got it wrong and lost a decade. Prayer for a household is never once returned empty.

You have been doing something God received every single time, and no prayer for a family has ever once been filed as a mistake. The Holy Spirit is the one who has been at work during all fifteen of those years, and it is written that a causeless thing does not come.

What changes now is not that you stop praying. It is that you add the thing you have never done, which is to look at it, describe it plainly, and name it out loud in front of the people who learned it by watching.

That is the doorway. Not a category, not a formula, not a night of contending. A plain sentence, said in a kitchen, by a man who has finally looked.

You are able to say one plain sentence after fifteen years of praying, and naming a thing has never once been less spiritual than contending with it. The Spirit of God is what makes ordinary words carry weight in a family, and Proverbs 26:2 puts the whole matter at the level of whether there is anything for it to land on.
