If he were angry, you would know what to do.
There would be a thing that happened, and a version of it from each side, and eventually somebody would say something and it would be terrible and then it would be over.
This is not that. There was no thing. There was a gradual widening, over about six years, with no incident anywhere in it. Messages answered a day later, then three days, then not. Birthdays remembered and then done by text. A Christmas he did not come to that had a completely reasonable explanation.
And now you are here, with a brother who is not angry with you and who is not there, and no vocabulary at all for describing that to anybody.

Why a fade is harder
Let me name why this is worse than a falling out, because people will tell you it is better and they are wrong.
A falling out has a shape. There is an event, a grievance, a thing to address. Both people know what the subject is. And crucially, there is something to forgive, which means there is a road, however hard.
A fade has none of that. There is nothing to address, nothing to apologize for, nothing to point at, and any attempt to raise it turns you into the person making something out of nothing.
You have been carrying something that has no shape at all, and no loss has ever once been smaller for having no incident inside it. Job 19:14 says my kinsfolk have failed, and my familiar friends have forgotten me, which is the written word putting exactly this into scripture, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a shapeless thing as seriously as a loud one.
And he is a whole man in this, and here is the part that will loosen it slightly. A fade is almost never a decision.
It is a hundred moments where somebody was busy, or tired, or meant to reply on Thursday. There is no meeting where a man decides to let his sister go. It happens by default, and default is not a verdict.
He may also be doing the same arithmetic from his side, and he is right about at least one thing you have never conceded.
You are able to read a silence as default rather than as decision, and six years of drift has never once been the same as six years of choosing. The Spirit of God is what keeps a gap from being filled with the worst account of it, and it is written in Job 19 that kinsfolk fail and familiar friends forget.
My kinsfolk have failed
My kinsfolk have failed, and my familiar friends have forgotten me. (Job 19:14, King James Version)
Job is in the middle of the worst chapter of his life and he lists what he has lost, and this is on the list.
Not an argument. Not a betrayal. Forgotten. He uses the word for people simply ceasing to think of him, and he puts it alongside the enormous losses in that chapter as though it belongs there.
Scripture treats being forgotten by your own people as a real category of suffering, worth naming, in a book everybody agrees is about serious things.
You are carrying something scripture puts on a list with the heaviest losses, and being forgotten has never once been a lesser grief than being wronged. It is written in Job 19:14 that my kinsfolk have failed and my familiar friends have forgotten me, which is the written word giving this its own line, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does not require a loss to have an incident in it before He will treat it as one.
And notice that Job does not build a case. He does not describe what his kinsfolk should have done, or assign motives, or work out which of them started it.
He says what happened and he takes it to God. That is the whole move, and it is available to you tonight.
You are able to say what happened without deciding what anybody meant, and naming a loss has never once required a defendant. The Spirit of God is the one who receives an account with nobody blamed in it, and Job 19 lists the forgetting without one word of accusation attached.
Reaching into a quiet
Here is the practical part, and the shape of it is set by the shape of the problem.
Because there was no incident, there is nothing to resolve, which means the message does not have to carry anything. That is the good news buried in this.
You do not need to raise it. You do not need to name the six years. There is no conversation you have to have first, because there is no subject.
You are able to reach without addressing anything, and a fade has never once required a conversation in order to be crossed. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes a small ordinary contact possible after years, and it is written that kinsfolk fail and familiar friends forget.
So send something with nothing in it. Truly nothing. A photograph of a thing he would recognize. A line about weather where he is. Something about a person you both know who is doing well.
And here is the part that matters most, and it is about repetition. One message probably does nothing. A fade took six years and it is not undone by a Tuesday.
What crosses a fade is a small regular thing. Once a month, with nothing in it, for a year, expecting nothing back. Not because he owes you a reply, but because default is what did this, and the only thing that beats a default is another default.
You are able to become somebody's ordinary again, and a small thing repeated has never once needed a single conversation to do its work. The Spirit of God is what sustains something with no visible result for a long time, and Job 19:14 names the forgetting without ever suggesting the forgotten man was at fault.
So here is what I believe is going out over a woman with a brother who is not angry and is not there.
You are able to reach into a quiet with no argument in it, and a fade has never once meant a decision was made about you. Job 19:14 says my kinsfolk have failed, and my familiar friends have forgotten me, listed among the heaviest losses in that chapter, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a shapeless grief entirely seriously.
And this, which is the word I came with.
You were never decided against, and six years of default has never once been the same as six years of somebody choosing. The Spirit of God is speaking over a woman in a front room who has just sent something small, and it is written in Job 19 that a man named the forgetting and took it to God without building one case.
Once a month. Nothing in it. For a year.
Declare this over yourself
- Six years of nothing ever happening, you have no claim on my brother. Job 19:14 says my kinsfolk have failed and my familiar friends have forgotten me, so by the Holy Spirit I send one small thing today and I put the next one in a calendar, in the name of Jesus.
- Question of whether I am allowed to miss him, you were never once something I had to answer first. The written word puts being forgotten on the list with the heaviest losses, and by the Holy Spirit I name it to God and I stop waiting for a reason.
- Father, You let a man name the forgetting without building one case against anybody, and You have never once required an incident before You would call something a loss. Your word says my familiar friends have forgotten me, so by Your Spirit I become somebody's ordinary again, once a month, expecting nothing.
