Nobody ever asked you.
There was no conversation. There was no afternoon where the family sat down and appointed you. It happened the way these things happen, one small competence at a time, over about twenty five years, until you were forty eight and running the emotional weather for four adults.
You know who is upset before they do. You know which two cannot be seated together. You know the sentence that will land badly and you head it off, usually in the ninety seconds before anybody else has noticed there is anything to head off.
And when it works, which is most of the time, nobody sees it. That is what makes it invisible labor: the successful version leaves no trace.
Before anything else. If what is happening in that family is not difficulty but harm, if somebody there frightens you or hurts you, then this article is not the thing you need first. Getting yourself safe, and talking to somebody qualified where you live, comes before every word of it.

What the job actually is
Let me describe the job, because it has never once been written down and that is part of why it never ends.
You pre-read the room. You translate. You soften. You warn. You call one person before the gathering to check the mood, and another one afterward to check the damage. You carry information between people who could carry it themselves and choose not to.
None of this is on any list. There is no title for it and no handover and no end of shift.
You have been running an operation nobody named, and invisible work has never once been the same thing as easy work. Exodus 18:18 says the thing thou doest is not good and thou wilt surely wear away, which is the written word saying it plainly, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person hear that as kindness rather than as criticism.
And here is what I am not going to do. I am not going to explain your mother to you, or your brother, or hand you a way of thinking about either of them. This site does not know your family and will not hand you a label for anybody in it.
What I will say is that both of them are real people with real reasons. Your brother has never once been asked to carry any of this, and it is entirely possible nobody ever showed him how. Your mother is right about something you have never conceded to her.
You are able to hold every one of them as a person and still put the job down, and doing that has never once required anybody to be at fault. The Spirit of God is what makes a boundary possible without a verdict attached, and Exodus 18 records a man being told he cannot do this alone.
Thou wilt surely wear away
Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone. (Exodus 18:18, King James Version)
That is Jethro talking to Moses, and the setting matters enormously.
Moses is doing exactly this. He is sitting from morning until evening handling every dispute personally, and he is doing it well, and the people are being served. Nobody is complaining. By every visible measure the arrangement is working.
His father-in-law watches for one day and tells him it is not good.
You have been performing something you were never able to perform alone, and the fact that it has been working has never once meant it was sustainable. It is written in Exodus 18:18 that the thing is too heavy for thee, which is the written word measuring the load rather than the person, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says it without any accusation in it.
Look at what Jethro does not say. He does not say Moses is doing it wrong. He does not say the people are ungrateful, or that they should manage themselves, or that Moses has a character flaw that makes him take too much on.
He says the thing is too heavy. The weight is the problem, not the man carrying it.
You are not being corrected here, and being told a load is too heavy has never once been the same as being told you failed. The Spirit of God is the one who distinguishes a weight from a fault, and Exodus 18 has a man told plainly that he is not able to perform it alone.
The word nobody says
Now the part that will be hardest, and I want to say it carefully.
The fear is that if you stop, it falls apart.
And you may be right. Some of it probably will. There will be a gathering that goes badly, and a phone call that does not get made, and somebody will be upset in a way you could have prevented and did not.
That is the actual cost and I am not going to pretend it away. What I will say is that the cost of continuing is also real, and it is being paid entirely by one person, and that person is forty eight and tired in a way that sleep does not touch.
You are permitted to let one thing go badly, and one difficult evening in that family has never once been a catastrophe you caused. The Holy Spirit is the one who steadies a person through the first week of not doing something, and it is written that the thing thou doest is not good, thou wilt surely wear away.
And here is what Jethro actually prescribes, because it is not stopping. It is distributing. He tells Moses to let other people carry the small matters and to bring only the hard ones.
Nobody in that chapter is abandoned. The work still gets done. It stops going through one body.
You are able to hand one piece of this to somebody else, and letting another adult do it badly has never once been the same as neglect. The Spirit of God is what makes a person able to watch somebody else fumble it, and Exodus 18:18 says plainly that no one is able to perform this alone.
So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who has been running the weather in that family for twenty five years.
You have been carrying a load that was never assigned to you, and setting it down has never once been the same as abandoning anybody. Exodus 18:18 says the thing is too heavy for thee, thou art not able to perform it thyself alone, and the Holy Spirit is the one saying that over you tonight without one word of blame in it.
And this, which is the word I came with.
You were never appointed to this, and twenty five years of doing it well has never once obliged you to do it for twenty five more. The Spirit of God is speaking over somebody at a kitchen table with a cold cup of tea, and it is written in Exodus 18 that a man was told to distribute what he had been carrying alone.
One thing. This week. Do not do it.
Declare this over yourself
- Twenty five years of managing everybody, you have no claim on another week of my life. Exodus 18:18 says this thing is too heavy for thee and thou art not able to perform it alone, so by the Holy Spirit I name one thing tonight and leave it undone, in the name of Jesus.
- Fear that it falls apart without me, you were never once a reason to keep carrying what God called too heavy. The written word tells a man to distribute the load rather than to drop the people, and by the Holy Spirit I let one adult do one thing badly this week.
- Father, You had a man told plainly that the weight was the problem and never that he was, and You have never once appointed one person to carry a whole family. Your word says thou wilt surely wear away, so by Your Spirit I put one piece down and I do not pick it back up on Friday.
