The car pulls out and somebody starts within about forty seconds.
Never cruelly. That is the thing. It is affectionate, mostly, and funny, and it takes the form of small observations about how they are, and one or two of them are extremely accurate.
And everybody joins in. Including you. For years.
And what you noticed at the last one, while you were drying something, is that you have a stock of these. Little characterizations, refined over about a decade, and you can produce one on demand and it will land, and you have never once thought about what they add up to.
And if anybody used the word gossip about it, everybody in that kitchen would be genuinely offended, and would have a reasonable case. Nothing is invented. Nothing is malicious. Nobody says a word that could not be defended.
It is just that it happens every single time, within a minute, for about ten years, and nobody has ever once counted it up.

What the review is actually doing
Let me name it, because nothing about it looks like harm.
The review is a bonding activity. That is why it is so hard to stop. It is a room of people who have known each other forever, briefly confirming that they are the ones who have known each other forever, by discussing the ones who have not.
Nobody in that kitchen would say a word of it to their faces, and nobody thinks of it as unkind, and if you described it to your own mother she would be genuinely surprised.
You have been bonding at somebody's expense without one person intending it, and no affectionate observation has ever once been able to stay only affectionate over ten years. Proverbs 16:28 says a whisperer separateth chief friends, which is the written word describing the mechanism plainly, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can show a person a habit in the middle of drying a plate.
And they are whole people, the ones in the car. They almost certainly know. Everybody who marries into a family has some sense that there is a version of them that gets discussed once they leave, and most people carry that lightly and it costs them something anyway.
At least one of them is right about something nobody in that kitchen has conceded.
You are able to see the ones in the car as people who probably know, and a review nobody hears has never once stayed inside the room it happened in. The Spirit of God is what makes an invisible cost visible, and it is written in Proverbs 16 that a whisperer separates people who were close.
A whisperer separateth chief friends
A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends. (Proverbs 16:28, King James Version)
Two people in that verse and the second one is the one nobody thinks they are.
A froward man sows strife. That is the obvious one: somebody deliberately stirring things up, and everybody can identify him and nobody in your kitchen is him.
And then a whisperer separateth chief friends. A whisperer is not a liar and is not necessarily malicious. It is somebody who says things in a smaller room than the one the subject is in, and the verse says the effect is separation.
You have been doing the second thing in that verse rather than the first, and no whispering has ever once required an intention in order to separate people. It is written in Proverbs 16:28 that a whisperer separateth chief friends, which is the written word describing an effect rather than a motive, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets somebody see themselves in the sentence they assumed was about somebody else.
And notice the phrase chief friends. That is not describing enemies being kept apart. It is people who were close, or who could have been, and the whisperer is what stands between them.
That is what a decade of forty second reviews has quietly done. Not made anybody hostile. Just held a distance in place that would otherwise have closed by now.
You are able to stop holding a distance you never meant to hold, and no ordinary kitchen conversation has ever once been able to stay separate from the room next door. The Spirit of God is what shows the shape of an effect nobody wanted, and Proverbs 16 puts the separating of close friends squarely on the whisperer.
Stopping in a kitchen
Here is the practical thing and it is the smallest possible act.
Say nothing.
Not a correction. Not a defense of them. Not a remark about how everybody should be kinder, which would land as a rebuke and would make you insufferable and would change nothing.
Just do not contribute. Dry the plate. Let somebody else's line land and do not add yours.
You are able to leave a gap where your line used to go, and one person going quiet has never once required anybody in a room to be told anything. The Holy Spirit is the one present when a person declines to say a thing, and it is written that a whisperer separateth chief friends.
And there is a second half, which is the one that actually changes something. Say one genuinely good thing about them, once, at some point in the evening, in an ordinary tone.
Not as a corrective and not immediately after somebody else's line, which would be a rebuke wearing a coat. Later, unconnected, about something specific. She was good with your mother today. He fixed that thing without being asked.
That is it. It costs nothing, it corrects nobody, and it puts something in the room that was not there before.
You are able to put one true good sentence into a kitchen, and a specific compliment about somebody absent has never once been a criticism of anybody present. The Spirit of God is what makes an ordinary sentence do more than it looks like it should, and Proverbs 16:28 leaves the whole matter at the level of what gets said in a smaller room.
So here is what I believe is going out over somebody drying a plate in a kitchen after a gathering.
You are able to stop when the door closes, and years of joining in has never once meant you intended a single word of it. Proverbs 16:28 says a whisperer separateth chief friends, describing an effect rather than a motive, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a person a habit while they are holding a dish towel.
And this, which is the word I came with.
You were never being unkind in that kitchen, and a decade of affectionate accuracy has never once been the same as a decision to hold anybody at a distance. The Spirit of God is speaking over two people clearing plates in the evening light, and it is written in Proverbs 16 that what a whisperer separates is people who were close or could have been.
Say nothing. Then, later, say one good thing.
Declare this over yourself
- Forty seconds after the car pulls out, you have no claim on my mouth. Proverbs 16:28 says a whisperer separateth chief friends, so by the Holy Spirit I say nothing this time and I dry the plate, in the name of Jesus.
- Stock of little characterizations, you were never once meant unkindly by me or by anybody. The written word describes an effect and not a motive, and by the Holy Spirit I say one specific good thing later in the evening.
- Father, You named the whisperer as the one who stands between people who were close, and You have never once needed an intention before there was an effect. Your word says a whisperer separateth chief friends, so by Your Spirit I leave the gap where my line used to go.
