Who Married InIsaiah 43:1

She Is Still Introduced As His Wife

This message is for the reader who has watched a sister-in-law be named by her husband for twelve years, and has never once been the person who says her name first

It happens at every single gathering and nobody has ever noticed it.

Somebody new arrives. Your cousin's new partner, a neighbor, whoever. And there is a round of introductions, and it goes: this is my brother Dave, and this is Dave's wife.

Twelve years. Two children. She organized your father's seventieth. She was at the hospital the night of the thing nobody talks about.

And she is still, in the ordinary grammar of that family, an attachment to a man.

Nobody means it. That is the whole difficulty with this one. There is no unkindness anywhere in it, and if you said this out loud to your brother he would be genuinely upset, and she has never once mentioned it.

She Is Still Introduced As His Wife

What the grammar is doing

Let me be precise, because a small thing repeated four hundred times is not a small thing.

An introduction assigns a position. This is Dave, and this is Dave's wife, tells a stranger two things: who is native to this family, and who is here by connection. It is done in under two seconds and nobody in the room hears it as anything.

She hears it. Not painfully, probably. But twelve years of being the second half of a sentence does something, and she has no way of raising it that would not sound absurd.

You have been watching a position get assigned four hundred times, and no repetition that small has ever once needed anybody to intend it. Isaiah 43:1 says fear not, for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name, thou art mine, which is the written word doing the exact opposite thing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an ordinary sentence carry weight in a hallway.

And your brother is a whole man in this. He is not diminishing her. He is doing what he watched everybody do, and he introduces her that way because that is the shape the sentence has always had in that room.

He is right about at least one thing you have never conceded, and this is not a grievance to be litigated with him.

You are able to change something without raising it with anybody, and one different sentence has never once required a family to be corrected. The Spirit of God is what makes a quiet change possible, and it is written in Isaiah 43 that He calls a person by their name.

I have called thee by thy name

But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. (Isaiah 43:1, King James Version)

Read the order of those clauses, because the order is the whole thing.

I have called thee by thy name. And then: thou art mine. The naming comes first, and the belonging comes after, and the naming is specific rather than categorical.

He does not say I have called thee by thy position. He does not say I have called thee as one of the people connected to somebody I actually wanted.

You are known by a God who starts with a name rather than a category, and no belonging in scripture has ever once been announced by its connection to somebody else. It is written in Isaiah 43:1 that I have called thee by thy name, thou art mine, which is the written word putting the name in front of the belonging, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that ordinary in a family hallway.

And notice who is being addressed. Jacob and Israel, which are two names for the same man, one of them the name he was born with and one of them the name he was given after a night he did not win.

God uses both. He does not sort somebody into a single label and file them.

You are dealing with a God who holds a whole person and never a position, and no name of anybody has ever once been a description of who they married. The Spirit of God is what returns a person from an attachment to a person, and Isaiah 43 puts the calling by name before anything else it says.

Saying her name first

Here is the practical part, and it is one sentence and it takes two seconds.

At the next gathering, when somebody new arrives, you do the introduction.

This is Sarah. And this is her husband, my brother Dave.

You are able to reverse a sentence that has run one way for twelve years, and two seconds of ordinary grammar has never once been a criticism of anybody. The Holy Spirit is the one present in a very small change nobody notices, and it is written that He has called us by name and that we are His.

Nobody will comment. That is the point of this one. It will land as completely ordinary, because it is completely ordinary, and the only person in that room who will notice is her, and she will not say anything either.

And do not explain it. Do not tell your brother what you are doing, and do not tell her, and do not raise the twelve years with anybody. An explanation turns a two second kindness into a family conversation about who has been failing.

You are able to do something kind without anybody knowing you did it, and a change that goes unremarked has never once been a smaller thing. The Spirit of God is what makes an unwitnessed act carry weight, and Isaiah 43:1 puts the name first without any announcement about why.

And then the second half, which is the actual assignment. Ask her a real question. Not about Dave, and not about the children, which are the two categories she has been asked about for twelve years. About her.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man who has heard the same introduction four hundred times.

You are able to say her name first, and twelve years of an introduction has never once been something anybody decided on purpose. Isaiah 43:1 says I have called thee by thy name, thou art mine, putting the name in front of the belonging, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes two ordinary seconds carry weight in a hallway.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You have somebody at that table you have never once actually met, and eleven years of being in a room together has never been the same as knowing a person. The Spirit of God is speaking over somebody standing in a living room mid introduction, and it is written in Isaiah 43 that God holds a whole person and never a position.

Say her name first. Then ask her something real.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Sentence that has run one way for twelve years, you have no claim on the next introduction. Isaiah 43:1 says I have called thee by thy name, thou art mine, so by the Holy Spirit I say her name first this week, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Grammar that makes a woman the second half, you were never once decided on purpose by anybody. The written word puts the calling by name in front of the belonging, and by the Holy Spirit I ask her one real question and I listen to all of it.
  3. Father, You called a man by both his names and You have never once filed anybody as an attachment to somebody else. Your word says I have called thee by thy name, so by Your Spirit I do two seconds of ordinary grammar differently and I tell nobody why.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
