The group chat goes off at two in the morning and it is not an emergency.
It is your aunt, who is eight hours ahead, saying something about a wedding, and by the time you see it at seven your brother has already answered from a place where it is the middle of his afternoon, and somebody else will come in at four your time.
Nobody in this family has been awake at the same moment for years.
And every so often somebody says the sentence. We should all get together. Everybody agrees enthusiastically and nobody costs it out, because if anybody costed it out the conversation would stop, and then there would be nothing to say.
So the sentence stays in the chat, warm and unpriced, and the last time it actually happened was 2016.

The room that is never going to happen
Let me say the hard part early, because carrying it unsaid is heavier than hearing it.
The room may never happen. Not because anybody stopped loving anybody, but because of visas and money and school terms and a job that will not move and somebody who cannot fly.
And you have organized a quiet portion of your inner life around waiting for it.
You have been holding your family in a waiting room, and no gathering has ever once been what made a household real. Acts 17:26 says God determined the times before appointed and the bounds of their habitation, and the Holy Spirit is the one who holds a family together across a distance nobody chose.
Now, the part that gets missed. Everybody in that chat is a real person with a real reason for being where they are. Your cousin did not leave to be far away. She went because there was work, or because somebody needed her there, or because a door opened and she walked through it the way anybody would.
And at least one of them is right about something you have never conceded, which is that the family has actually been fine, in its own strange shape, this whole time.
You are able to stop treating distance as a failure somebody caused, and a scattered family has never once been a broken one. The Spirit of God is what turns a map into a household rather than a diagram of loss, and it is written in Acts 17 that God set the bounds of where people live.
The bounds of their habitation
And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation. (Acts 17:26, King James Version)
Paul is standing in Athens saying something enormous, and it is easy to read past it.
He says God made every nation of one blood, and then he says God determined two things: the times, and the bounds of their habitation. Where people live. The actual coordinates.
This is not a verse about migration policy. It is a verse about a God who is not surprised by where anybody ended up, and who was involved in it, down to the address.
You have relatives standing on ground God appointed, and no member of that family has ever once landed somewhere by accident. It is written in Acts 17:26 that He determined the bounds of their habitation, which is the written word putting the map inside His hands, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is equally present in all four of those countries at once.
And there is a detail in the passage worth stopping on. Paul says it to explain why God is findable. The next verse says the reason for all the scattering was that men should seek Him and find Him, though He be not far from every one of us.
The scattering was not a punishment in that sermon. It was the shape of a search.
You are inside a scattering that has a purpose written over it, and God has never once dispersed a family in order to lose track of them. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a distance load bearing rather than merely long, and Acts 17 says plainly that He is not far from every one of us.
What a family this shape actually has
Here is the part I want you to weigh honestly, because it is genuinely yours and it has been getting discounted.
Families in one town see each other constantly and often say almost nothing. Proximity does that. You see somebody twice a week for thirty years and you can go the whole thirty without one real conversation, because there is always next Tuesday.
Your family has never had next Tuesday. Every contact costs something: a bad hour, a bad connection, somebody standing in a hallway at midnight.
And what that produces is a family where nobody wastes a call.
You have been given a household that does not do small talk, and a family that has to choose its moments has never once been the poorer version. The Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person value what they actually have, and it is written that God determined the times and the bounds of the habitation of every one of them.
There is a second thing. You are the one who holds it. Somebody in every scattered family becomes the hub, the one who knows who is unwell and who has a birthday and who has gone quiet, and in this one it is you.
That is not nothing, and nobody has ever thanked you for it, and it is closer to ministry than to admin.
You are doing something in that family that nobody appointed you to and everybody depends on, and it has never once been invisible to God. The Spirit of God is the one who sees an unpaid job nobody named, and Acts 17:26 keeps every one of those addresses inside a decision He made.
So here is what I believe is going out over somebody who has been waiting since 2016 for a room.
You are held together as a family across four time zones, and God has never once needed everybody in one room to keep a household. Acts 17:26 says He determined the times before appointed and the bounds of their habitation, and the Holy Spirit is the one standing in all four of those countries tonight.
And this, which is the word I came with.
You have a whole family, right now, in its actual shape, and a household spread across a map has never once been a household waiting to begin. The Spirit of God is speaking over somebody reading a message at seven in the morning, and it is written in Acts 17 that He is not far from every one of us, which includes every one of them.
Call one person this week. Not the chat. One.
Declare this over yourself
- Sentence about all getting together, you have no claim on whether this family is real. Acts 17:26 says God determined the bounds of their habitation, so by the Holy Spirit I stop waiting for a room and call one person this week, in the name of Jesus.
- Nine years of time zones, you were never once a verdict on anybody who left. The written word says He is not far from every one of us, and by the Holy Spirit I put down the idea that distance is somebody's fault.
- Father, You set the bounds of where every one of them lives and You were never once surprised by a single address. Your word says He hath determined the times before appointed, so by Your Spirit I say one name out loud tonight and thank You for one true thing about them.
