You have never once said it out loud, and it has been sitting there for about fifteen years.
The sentence is: I think I was put in the wrong family.
Not the dramatic version. You do not think God is cruel and you do not think He was absent. You think something more specific and more corrosive, which is that a mistake was made. That there is a household somewhere that would have fitted, and this one did not, and something got filed incorrectly a long time ago.
And here is what it has done, which is the actual reason I am writing to you.
You cannot pray properly any more. Not because you stopped believing. Because every prayer runs into that sentence about ninety seconds in, and you steer around it, and a prayer with a swerve in it stops feeling like a conversation and starts feeling like a report.

The swerve
Let me describe what happens, because you may not have noticed the mechanism.
You start praying. It goes fine for a while. Then you reach the part of your life where that family sits, and something in you routes around it, the way a road goes around a field nobody will sell.
So you pray about work. You pray about your health. You pray for other people generously and at length. And the largest unresolved thing in your life goes unmentioned, week after week, year after year.
You have been praying around the one subject that matters, and no honest sentence has ever once been the thing that ends a conversation with God. Isaiah 45:9 is a passage about a man arguing with his Maker, which means the written word already contains the argument, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can carry a sentence you have been afraid to say.
And I want to name something about the family itself before going further. Whoever is in that house, they are people. Your father had his own reasons, mostly handed to him by somebody who did the same to him. Somebody in that family is right about a thing you have never conceded.
None of that obliges you to feel differently. It is just true, and true things are safer to pray with than tidy ones.
You are able to hold a family accurately and painfully at the same time, and accuracy has never once required you to soften anything. The Spirit of God is what makes an honest look survivable, and it is written in Isaiah 45 that the clay does not say to the potter what makest thou.
Woe unto him that striveth
Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou? (Isaiah 45:9, King James Version)
Now, that verse looks like it is here to shut you up, and it is not. Read who it is addressed to.
Isaiah 45 is a chapter about Cyrus, a foreign king God is using for His own purposes, and the striving in view is Israel objecting that God has chosen the wrong instrument. The complaint is precisely this: You picked wrongly. That is not the right person for this.
So the objection you have been carrying for fifteen years is already in the text. It was raised, by a whole nation, out loud, and God answered it rather than pretending it had not been said.
You have been carrying an objection scripture already prints, and God has never once been startled by somebody saying He chose badly. It is written in Isaiah 45:9 that the clay does not say to him that fashioneth it what makest thou, which is the written word taking the question seriously enough to answer it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can hold your version of it without flinching.
And notice what the answer actually is. It is not a defense and it is not an argument. It is a reminder of who is doing the fashioning. The potter is not being accused of malice in that chapter. He is being told He made a filing error, and the answer is: I did not.
You are dealing with a God who does not make placement errors, and no household on this earth has ever once been assigned by accident. The Spirit of God is the one who settles a fifteen year old question at the level it was actually asked, and Isaiah 45 has the whole complaint written out before the answer comes.
Saying it out loud
Here is the practical instruction, and it is going to feel wrong for about a minute.
Say it to Him.
Not the polished version. Not I have sometimes struggled with my family situation. The actual sentence, the one that has been sitting there for fifteen years, in the words you use when you say it to yourself in the car.
I think You got this wrong.
You have permission to bring that sentence, and God has never once required a complaint to be tidied before He would receive it. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries a prayer nobody else would recognize as a prayer, and it is written in Isaiah 45 that the striving was said out loud before the answer arrived.
The reason this matters is not therapeutic. It is that a swerve in prayer is a wall, and walls do not stay in one place. The subject you cannot raise becomes two subjects, then five, and after a decade the whole relationship is being conducted around a field nobody will sell.
Scripture is full of people saying unreasonable things directly to God. Job does it at length. Jeremiah accuses God of deceiving him. The psalms ask how long about forty times.
Not one of those men was struck down for it. Every one of them was answered.
You are joining a long line of people who said the hard thing first, and speaking plainly to God has never once been the same as striving against Him. The Spirit of God is what makes a raw sentence into a prayer, and Isaiah 45:9 puts the argument itself into the written word rather than leaving it out.
So here is what I believe is going out over a man who has been steering around one field for fifteen years.
You were set in this family by a God who does not make placement errors, and honest anger has never once disqualified anybody from praying. Isaiah 45:9 puts the whole complaint into the text before it answers it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who will carry the sentence out of your mouth when you finally say it.
And this, which is the word I came with.
You have not been filed incorrectly, and there has never once been another household somewhere that you were supposed to have. The Spirit of God is speaking over a man walking a road at first light, and it is written in Isaiah 45 that the clay does not tell the potter He made a mistake, because He did not.
Say it out loud. Then keep talking.
Declare this over yourself
- Fifteen years of the wrong family, you have no claim on my prayers any more. Isaiah 45:9 says shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it what makest thou, so by the Holy Spirit I say the whole sentence out loud today, in the name of Jesus.
- Swerve at ninety seconds, you were never once required by God to be there. The written word prints the objection before it prints the answer, and by the Holy Spirit I bring the untidy version and keep talking afterward.
- Father, You do not make filing errors, and You have never once needed my complaint to be polished before You would receive it. Your word says woe unto him that striveth with his Maker, and it prints the striving anyway, so by Your Spirit I say one name from this family and thank You for one true thing.
