The GatheringProverbs 15:1

The Same Question Every Year

This message is for the reader who gets asked the same painful question at every gathering and has never found an answer that ends it

It comes about ninety minutes in, and it always comes from the same person, and it is always framed as interest.

So. Any news?

And everybody at that table knows what is being asked, and everybody knows the shape of the thing behind it, and you have about a second and a half to produce a face.

You have been rehearsing an answer for this since roughly August. You have three versions. The light one, the honest one you will not use, and a deflection that has worked twice and failed once.

And here is the thing that actually costs you. It is not the question. It is that you spend the whole afternoon waiting for it, which means you are never once at that table, even in the hour and a half before it arrives.

The Same Question Every Year

The project that cannot succeed

Let me name the project, because it has been running for years and it cannot succeed.

The project has been to find the answer that ends it. A sentence so complete, so gracefully constructed, that the person asking will finally understand and will not ask again.

That sentence does not exist. Not because you have not found the right words, but because the asking is not being caused by a lack of information.

You have been solving the wrong problem for years, and no answer has ever once been able to close a question that was not really about the answer. Proverbs 15:1 says a soft answer turneth away wrath, which is the written word offering a deflection rather than a victory, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can take a person into a room without a case in their hands.

And she is a whole person, whoever asks it. In a great many families that question is the only tool somebody has for saying that they think about you. It arrives badly and it is often clumsy and it is frequently the closest thing to affection available to them.

She may also be right about something, in a way she has never managed to put well, and you have heard the whole thing as an attack for so long that you would not now be able to hear it if she did.

You are able to hear a badly asked question without it being a verdict, and a clumsy sentence has never once been the same as a cruel one. The Spirit of God is what makes an ordinary charity possible in a hard moment, and it is written in Proverbs 15 that a soft answer turns away wrath.

A soft answer

A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger. (Proverbs 15:1, King James Version)

Notice what a soft answer is and what it is not.

It is not a good answer. It is not a true and complete account. It is not the sentence that finally makes the other person understand. Soft is about weight, not content, and the verse is describing a way of putting something down rather than a way of winning.

And notice what it does. It turns wrath away. It does not resolve the underlying matter, convert anybody, or settle the question for next year. It just takes the heat out of one moment.

You have permission to give an answer that settles nothing, and one soft sentence has never once been a failure to stand up for yourself. It is written in Proverbs 15:1 that a soft answer turneth away wrath, which is the written word setting the bar at the moment rather than at the matter, and the Holy Spirit is the one who supplies a light sentence when a heavy one is what you had prepared.

And there is a warning in the second half of the verse that is worth taking seriously, because it is where your three prepared versions live. Grievous words stir up anger. The word behind grievous means painful, cutting, the sentence that lands.

You have almost certainly got one of those in your pocket. Most people who have been asked the same question for eight years do.

You are able to leave the cutting sentence in your pocket, and not using a thing you have earned the right to use has never once been weakness. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps a mouth shut when a mouth is fully loaded, and Proverbs 15 puts the grievous words and the soft answer side by side as two available roads.

The ninety minutes before

Here is the thing worth changing, and it is not the answer at all.

It is the waiting.

You arrive braced. And bracing is not a state you can hold quietly, so for ninety minutes there is a version of you that is slightly elsewhere, half listening, scanning for the approach. People notice. They do not know what they are noticing, but the room gets a version of you that is not entirely present, and then the question comes and confirms the whole thing.

The afternoon has been lost before anybody said anything.

You are able to be entirely in that room before the question comes, and one hour with your family has never once had to be spent in a waiting position. The Holy Spirit is the one who brings a person all the way into the hour they are standing in, and it is written that a soft answer turns away wrath while grievous words stir up anger.

And there is a small practical thing that changes the whole shape of it, which is deciding your leaving time before you arrive.

Not as an escape. As a boundary on your own body. When the afternoon has an end that you chose, the question stops being the event the day is organized around, because there is something else in the calendar that is also fixed, and it is yours.

You are permitted to leave at a time you chose, and going home at four has never once been the same as losing. The Spirit of God is what makes an ordinary departure ordinary, and Proverbs 15:1 leaves the whole encounter at the level of one moment and one sentence.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody who has been rehearsing since August.

You are walking in there with nothing to prove, and no answer you give at that table has ever once been what settles the matter. Proverbs 15:1 says a soft answer turneth away wrath, and the Holy Spirit is the one who will hand you six light words at the moment the heavy ones are loaded.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You were never on trial in that dining room, and ninety minutes of waiting has never once been able to protect anybody from anything. The Spirit of God is speaking over somebody who has been braced since the drive over, and it is written in Proverbs 15 that the soft answer is a way of putting a moment down rather than a way of winning it.

Six words. Then ask her something real.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Question that arrives ninety minutes in, you have no claim on my whole afternoon. Proverbs 15:1 says a soft answer turneth away wrath, so by the Holy Spirit I answer in six words and ask her something real, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Sentence sharpened since August, you were never once able to end this. The written word says grievous words stir up anger, and by the Holy Spirit I leave the cutting one in my pocket and go home at the time I chose.
  3. Father, You set the whole thing at the level of one moment and one sentence, and You have never once required me to win a table in order to leave it whole. Your word says a soft answer turneth away wrath, so by Your Spirit I name my leaving time out loud and tell one person before I walk in.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
